Description
Where does it come from?
Lemon litsea, also known as exotic verbena or May Chang, is an Asian plant with the botanical name “Litsea cubeba”. Originally from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia – such as China, Indonesia and Taiwan – this plant belongs to the laurel family (*Lauraceae*). It bears small yellow-green flowers and fragrant berries resembling small peppercorns.
The manufacture of lemon litsea essential oil
Lemon litsea essential oil is extracted from these small fruits via steam distillation. During this process, the berries are crushed and heated with water vapour, releasing the oil. The fragrance-enriched vapour is then cooled, separating water and oil. Eventually, the essential oil rises to the surface and can be extracted. The remaining distillation water, which often still contains aromatic properties, is called hydrolate.
Freshness
When diffused, lemon lime essential oil is appreciated for its fresh, lemony fragrance reminiscent of lemon verbena, although the two plants are botanically unrelated. Its lively and fruity notes make it an excellent choice to refresh the atmosphere of a room, dispel stale odours and create a sense of clarity and cleanliness.
And cleansing
Lemon lime essential oil is attributed with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties that can help purify the air and maintain a healthy environment. This action makes it a useful ally during periods when colds are common.
We use it in our Lemon Litsea and Ginger Soap and in our Lemon Litsea Bath Bombs.
