The origins
Peppermint, Latin name Mentha piperita, is an aromatic hybrid plant, a natural cross between water mint (Mentha aquatica) and spearmint (Mentha spicata). Although its exact origin is unknown, it is believed that its use – like that of its ‘ancestors’ – began in the Mediterranean. Today, it is grown worldwide in temperate climates, especially in Europe, North America and Asia.
The manufacture of peppermint oil
To make peppermint essential oil, the leaves of the plant are harvested just before flowering, the time when the concentration of aromatic active substances is at its peak. These leaves are then subjected to steam distillation. This process involves passing steam through the plant material to extract the essential oils. The vapours, enriched with aromatic molecules, are then cooled, condensed and separated from the water, creating pure essential oil.
Diffusion
When diffused, peppermint oil is particularly valued for its refreshing and uplifting properties. Its main ingredient, menthol, provides an instant feeling of freshness, helps clear the mind and improve concentration. Therefore, it is often used in situations where mental alertness is required.
Relieves headaches
On the health front, peppermint oil can help relieve certain discomforts, such as headaches or nausea, thanks to its analgesic and anti-mistamine properties. It is also known for its beneficial effects on the respiratory system by providing relief from nasal congestion or symptoms of seasonal allergies.
Peppermint essential oil is also used for its cleansing properties. When diffused, it helps purify the air, neutralise unpleasant odours and create a healthier indoor environment.
We use it in our Peppermint soap.
