Where does it come from?

Lemongrass is a tropical aromatic plant mainly native to South and Southeast Asia, with important varieties in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka. The botanical name ‘Cymbopogon’ includes several species, but the best known for essential oil production are Javanese lemongrass (Cymbopogon winterianus) and Ceylon lemongrass (Cymbopogon nardus).

The manufacture of lemongrass essential oil

Lemongrass essential oil is obtained through steam distillation of freshly cut leaves. This process allows the volatile essence of the plant to be extracted without affecting the active ingredients. During distillation, steam flows through the leaves, after which the essential oil is separated from the condensation water by sedimentation thanks to its lower density.

Repellent properties against mosquitoes

The main constituent of lemongrass essential oil is citronellol, which gives it that characteristic fresh, lemony scent. When diffused, this oil is highly valued for its insect repellent properties, especially against mosquitoes.
