Description

Production of rosemary essential oil

Rosemary essential oil is produced by steam distillation of the leaves and flowering tops of the plant. The process begins by harvesting the plant at the optimal time, usually just before or during flowering, when it is rich in essential oils. The harvested leaves and flowers are then exposed to water vapour in a still, allowing the oil to be extracted. Once the fragrance-enriched water vapour condenses, the essential oil is separated by decanting, releasing it from the distillation water, which is also known as hydrolate.

The origin

Cineole rosemary is a variety of Rosmarinus distinguished mainly by its high content of cineole, also known as eucalyptol. It originates from the Mediterranean region, where the warm and sunny climate favours its vigorous growth and the production of its aromatic compounds.

Its cultivation

The cultivation of this aromatic and medicinal plant dates back far into history. Rosemary has been valued for centuries for its versatile uses in cooking, traditional medicine and cosmetics. Although all rosemary varieties have beneficial properties, cineole rosemary is particularly popular for its effectiveness in respiratory diseases, thanks to its specific chemical composition.

Diffusion

When diffused, cineole rosemary essential oil reveals a fresh and clarifying scent, with camphoraceous and slightly woody notes. It is known for its stimulating effect on the mind: it helps improve concentration and memory and is often used during periods of intense intellectual work.

Moreover, thanks to the cineol it contains, this rosemary variety possesses excellent expectorant and mucolytic properties, making it a valuable ally in coughs or stuffy noses. By purifying the air, it also helps to clear the airways, offering welcome relief during cold periods.

Invigorating

Rosemary essential oil with cineole also has strengthening properties for the body, and its diffusion can be invigorating when you are physically tired. It also possesses antiseptic properties, which help to purify the air in indoor spaces.

We use it in our Rosemary soap.
